Basic Instinct T-shirt by Secondopiano

I sewed a T-shirt! This is a very easy project, that everyone can sew even if you haven’t got a serger or a coverstitch machine.

Ladulsatina - Sewing and DIY Fashion blog _ Basic instincT t-shirt - frontI sewed this T-shirt with my serger and sewing machine (I haven’t got a coverstitch machine yet) and it took me about two hours to cut and make it. Sewing jersey is always fun! 🙂

I free downloaded the pdf pattern designed by Sasha on her blog Secondopiano. You can find the A4 and A0 digital sewing pattern and the pattern instructions in English and Italian inside the folder. The instructions are very clear, you can find lots of suggestions and even detailed instructions to matching stripes if you choose a striped jersey fabric.

I used a beautiful Italian dove-grey viscose jersey I bought at Asnaghi Giacinto in Milano. It’s a very soft and nice jersey to wear. I’m very happy with my choice!

The pattern file is a layered pdf, so I hid the size layers I’m not interested in and then I printed the A4 version at home. I drew my new hip sides combining the two sizes.

I sewed the T-shirt with a polyester thread (you can find suggestions to choose the right thread in the pattern instructions). I used a grey thread I already had at home for the inside and a matching dove-grey thread for topstitching.

Ladulsatina - Sewing and DIY Fashion blog _ Basic instincT t-shirt - inside detailI used a 4-thread overlock stitch on my serger and a stretch twin needle to topstitch. I sewed and topstitched the neckband with a single jersey needle and I used the walking foot, as suggested in the instructions.

For the first time I’ve had some little problems with the thread tension, so my topstitching is not perfectly flat (as you can see on the sleeves in particular). I did a lot of tests with different tension settings, but this is the best result I managed to get in the end. I’ll try again soon to fix this new thread tension “problem” on my sewing machine…I’ve never had this kind of problem before, even with light jersey fabric such as this viscose.

I like my new T-shirt very much! The fit is perfect and I’m gonna make new versions of it soon (I’d like to make a jersey mini-dress).
If you are looking for inspirations in order to make this T-shirt, you can find all Sasha’s beautiful versions on her blog Secondopiano (I love her striped T-shirts!) .
