Black & white DIY outfit: skirt and sweater

Spring has just started and this is my last outfit in winter colours and textures. It’s made up of a semi-fitted skirt and a jersey sweater with three quarters sleeves, that I both designed and sewed up.
I’m currently at an experimental stage…in October I signed up for a professional pattern making course and I’m starting to carry out some experiments.

I started off chosing the colour, getting back to one of my first loves: black.
This is a pencil skirt with contrasting pocket pieces on the front, invisible zip, waistband with button and vent on the back. I used an Italian bouclé/herringbone wool blend and a printed black cotton’s scrap for the contrasting pockets (that looks like leather). The skirt has a lined inside. I chose a metallic rounded button for the waistband closure on the back side.

Then I made a sweater with a simple kimono over-arm seam sleeve up. I had to sew two sweater tests up to find the right proportions (the first one was too loose to be woren with this kind of skirt).
I chose a light-medium weight viscose jersey.
I sewed it up with my overlocking machine directly using the 4-thread overlock stitch and I finished the cuff and the hem up with the jersey twin needle on my sewing machine. I finished the neckline up instead with a band cut on the more elastic side of the jersey fabric. Even in this case I had to carry out some tests to find the right band measurement (if too long or as long as the neckline, the neckline was loose, if too short the neckline was gathered).

Even for the pictures of this post I got back to my first photographic love: black and white.

Thank you so much! 🙂 Me too…I needed a top like this. I was looking around in shops but I’ve never found anything I like. They are always too tight or too loose, too short or too long. In the end I thought it was simpler make it up on my own 🙂

Grazie Sasha! 🙂 Sì è vero, l’ho già indossata anche con un’altra gonna. Stavo cercando da un po’ una maglia simile a questa. Alla fine me la sono cucita da me 😉

Hi Martina,
I would love to make a skirt like yours, it looks just perfect. As I understand you made your own pattern? Would you be able to somehow share it?

Many thanks for all your inspiration!
